アートと雑貨の間の、気負わずに生活に取り入れやすいアイテムを独自の審美眼でセレクトしている『PATINA（パティーナ）』店主、泉美貴子さん。器やクラフト、生活道具など経年変化を楽しめるアイテムを提案しながら、様々な作家の展示会を積極的に開いている。訪ねるごとに新しい発見がある店だ。実は店を始める5年前、自宅であるマンションの一室でアポイント制の店を営んでいた。その面影が残る自宅は一歩玄関を入ると、たくさんのドローイング、写真、レコード、本、器が美しくディスプレイされた、まるで小さなアートギャラリーのような空間。泉さんは、夫と小学3年生になる娘と3人暮らし。ともすれば、子ども仕様になってしまいがちな部屋を、絶妙なバランスで大人の趣味とうまくミックスさせている。部屋のあちらこちらにあるアートに目を奪われながら、家族で心地よく暮らすためのヒントを伺った。

Mikiko Izumi is the owner of lifestyle store PATINA that carries products halfway between art and commodities. While offering various dishware and craft products that fit perfectly to people’s everyday lives, Izumi organizes exhibitions at her own store for all sorts of artists. Therefore we can find something new whenever visiting PATINA. Since she used to use the doorway to her condo as a reservation-only store, the space still shows signs of the time with a number of beautifully displayed artworks, photographs, records, books and pottery. We felt as if we were in an art gallery as stepping into her home. Izumi lives there with her husband and nine-year-old daughter. Although people tend to decorate their house for their kids, she matches children’s stuff well to her own style. In such an adorable house, we asked her about tips for a comfortable life.

まず『PATINA』を始める前は、どういう仕事をされていたんですか。

もともと福岡市内の「BEAMS」で販売員をしていました。その後、「F.O.B COOP」のオープンと同時に入社し6、7年働きましたが、結婚や出産で仕事はいったんストップ。主人の転勤をきっかけに大阪に引っ越しました。

そこからご自身でお店を始める経緯は。

大阪で子育て中に、大きな病気を患いました。その時に、「これからは、好きなことをして生きていきたい」という気持ちが膨らんでいって。それが私のターニングポイントでした。大阪に住んでいた時に日本各地を巡り、さまざまな作家や作品に出会いました。もともとインテリアや雑貨に興味があったので福岡に戻ったら、それらを紹介したいなと思い始めて。最初は“アポイント制”という形にして、自宅で小さな店をスタートさせたんです。

そのお店となったのが、玄関を入ってすぐの空間ですか。

はい。まだ娘が小さかったので、あまり動けなかったんです。なので、週末だけお電話を頂いたときに開けていました。２年間自宅で店を続けて、今のビルへ移りました。今はこの空間を部屋にしてもいいんですけど、今でもこういう感じに。まだ昔の名残がありますね。

店の商品はどういう視点でセレクトしているんですか。

『PATINA』って“経年変化”という意味のラテン語なんですけど、使い込んでいくうちに味が出るもの、生活を心地よくするものを選んでいます。特に大事にしているのは、そのものに隠された背景や、ストーリーですね。私自身、家が大好きなんです。心地いいものに囲まれていると、家に帰ってきてからの時間がすごく充実しますよね。だから店でも長く大切に使っていけるものを提供していけたらと思っています。

取り扱っている作家を教えてください。　

海外の作家でも素敵だと思えば、コンタクトをとってみます。たとえば、ロンドン在住の陶芸家、舘林香織さんは、初の海外の取り扱い作家でした。彼女の作品は、随分前に、雑誌「ELLE DECOR」を読んで知ったのですが、繊細でいて独特の色、フォルムに目を奪われて…。どうしても取扱いしたくて直接コンタクトをとり、ロンドンまで会いに行きました。その時に「作家のJane Muir やDerek Wilsonも気になっている」と舘林さんに伝えたら、紹介してもらったこともありました。こういう縁が繋がっていくのは、本当にありがたいことでした。

それぞれの作家に共通するものはありますか。

私と同年代の方が多いです。アンティークよりも、「今」を感じるものが好きなんです。

Please let us know what you did before opening PATINA.

I used to work for BEAMS store in Fukuoka City as a salesperson. I then joined F.O.B. COOP when it established, and worked there for about six or seven years until I quitted the job after getting married and being pregnant. As my husband got a transfer to Osaka, I moved there with him and my daughter.

How did you start your own shop then?

When we were in Osaka, I had had a severe attack of sickness. I then started to feel like I wanted to do something I really loved. It was a major turning point for me. As I traveled across Japan when living in Osaka, I had met various artists and art works. Then my will to introduce those people and artworks in my hometown, Fukuoka, became stronger. That’s why I opened my first reservation-only store in my own house.

Was that the space in the doorway to your house?

Yes. I couldn’t be so active at that time because my daughter was too young. So I opened the store only on weekends when people asked me to do so by phone. After running my store in that manner, I moved it to the current location. Although I can use the space as an extra room now, it is still as it was. You may be able see traces of the past there.

What are your criteria for selecting products for your store?

I always select things that can be improved with use and make people’s lives more comfortable because my store’s name, PATINA, is a Latin word for “secular change.” Something I particularly focus on is backgrounds and stories behind those things. I personally love to stay at home. If you are surrounded by your favorite things, your time at home will be much more enriched. So I want to carry products that can be loved over a long time.

Could you please name artists whose work you handle in your store?

I dare to contact with overseas artists when I become quite fond of their work. For example, Kaori Tatebayashi, a London-based potter, is my first business partner lived abroad. I first saw her work when reading ELLE DÉCOR. Her delicate ceramics with unique form and color immediately caught my eyes. Because I felt compelled to carry her work in my store, I traveled to London to see her after making an appointment. At the time I told her that I was interested in other artists such as Jane Muir and Derek Wilson in a course of conversation, and she then brought me into contact with them. I was so grateful for meeting new artists through connection with her.

Do those artists have anything in common?

Most of them are of my generation. I like things that reflect the present fashion more than antique products.

それはなぜでしょう。

緒に成長していきたいという思いがあるからです。作家は有名無名問わず、自分がいいと思うものを信じて提案しています。生活雑貨を買おうと思えば素敵なお店はたくさんありますが、他と同じことをしていても意味がないので。あと、「ここだけにしかない」ということを大事にしていきたいですね。難しいことは分かっているんですけど。

店では、よく作家を呼んでイベントや展示会をされていますよね。

企画展は、通常取り扱っていないものを見ることができるチャンスですよね。普段は『PATINA』らしさを考えて発注しますが、企画展のときは種類をたくさん紹介するようにしています。そこでお客様がどういったものを好むのか、傾向を知るのが面白くて。意外と男性の方も来て下さるんですよ。男性一人でふらっと入れる店になってくれたら嬉しいですね。

流行のものはどのように捉えていらっしゃいますか。

「こういうものが流行ってるんだ！」と思いはしますが、店に取り入れることはしないです。陶器や磁器など、まず自分で購入して、使い心地を確かめてからオファーしています。使ったことがないものはよさが分からないし、好きでないものは売ることができない。眺めてきれい、使ってもよし、というのが決め手です。

Why is that?

It is because I always want to improve myself together with those artists. Regardless of how famous or prominent they are, artists believe in their own aesthetic tastes. And I put on a high value on things available only in my store. There are so many lifestyle stores in Japan, so it makes no sense to do same, even though I know it is quite hard to stick to such a style.

You often hold events and exhibitions in your store with artists.

Such exhibitions are great opportunities for customers to see products that I normally don’t carry. I usually place orders to artists considering whether their products would suite my store. During those exhibitions, however, I try to show as many products as possible. It’s so interesting to know my customers’ purchase tendency in such special occasions. I have male customers, too. I’d be happy if my store could be a casual drop-in place for them.

What do you think about trendy stuff?

Although I think like “Oh those are the thing now” when I see such stuff, I don’t carry it in my store. I always buy and use ceramics personally before ordering those for sale. You can’t judge the quality unless using it, and it’s not right to sell things you don’t like to your customers. Ceramics I select for my store have to be good both in appearance and functionality.

ご自宅も絵や写真、クラフトなどが美しく並べられた、ギャラリーのような雰囲気ですね。ご夫婦の世界観が感じられます。

築34年のマンションをリノベーションしました。玄関からリビングに行くまでの廊下は、絵やイラストをディスプレイして楽しんでいます。一部屋を大きく使うというよりも、棚で空間を区切って、そこにも作品を飾っています。いろんな作品がありますが、主人も私も可愛いものより、美しいものに惹かれるので、集まってきたものは喧嘩せずにバランスがとれていますね。
「主人が選ぶもの＝私が心地いいもの」が一致しているからいいのかも。とはいえ、本やレコード、クラフトなど、とにかくものが多い！本当はもっとシンプルに暮らしたいんですけど（笑）。

椅子もたくさんありますね。

このフリッツ・ハンセンのPKというソファは、座り心地は硬いんですけど、清々しいほどにフォルムが美しい。椅子に関しては主人の影響がかなりあります。椅子好きな人って、大変ですよ。お金がかかって仕方ないから（笑）。いいと思うものだったら、頑張ってでも手に入れたいっていう気持ちは、男性の方が強いかもしれませんね。

ご夫婦でお互いのセンスを信頼しあっているのは素敵ですね。何か新しいものを購入するときは話し合って決めるんですか。

女性は使い道や使い心地に現実的で、男性は鑑賞用の視点でものを見る傾向があると思います。たとえば、器を買いに行った時、私は「何の料理をのせようかな」って考えるけど、主人は「この場所に置いたら、きれいだと思う」と。お互い意見が納得し合えたら「買おうか」となりますね。　

Your house is like an art gallery with beautifully displayed paintings, photographs and craft arts. Here we can feel you and your husband’s sense of beauty.

We have renovated a 34-year-old condo. I enjoy displaying various paintings and illustrations in the hallway. I like to separate spaces with shelves and display art works on those rather than using a large room. Although there are so many types of things there, all the pieces are attuned well to each other because both my husband and I likes beautiful things rather than cute stuff. What my husband chooses is always equal to what I feel comfortable, and I think that’s the reason why everything we have is well-balanced. However it’s also true that we have too many stuff such as books, records and art pieces! To be honest, I want to live more simply (laugh).

You have many chairs, too.

This chair made by Fritz Hansen is quite hard to sit, but the form is just beautiful. My taste of chair design has been influenced significantly by my husband. It’s not easy to live with a chair lover because he spends so much money on it (laugh)! I think men have stronger motivation to obtain what they like even it is really hard to do so.

It’s really nice that you and your husband trust in each other’s taste. Do you discuss with him when you buy a new thing for your home?

I think women are more realistic on how they use a product or how comfortable a product is for use while men often see the same thing as a piece of art. When we visit a shop to buy dishware, for example, I always think about for which food I can use it while my husband says how he would display it in our house. We would buy it if both of us could agree with each other’s explanation.

同じものを選ぶのにも、道筋が違って面白いですね。泉さんご自身は、どんなカルチャーに影響されてきましたか。

映画と小説が本当に好きです。二十歳前後でヨーロッパの60、70年代の映画にものすごくはまりました。あの時代特有の映像、音楽、衣裳など、すべてが好きなんです。特に好きな映画は、フランソワ・トリュフォー監督のもの。『大人は判ってくれない』からずっと出演しているジャン・ピエール・レオが一番好きです。ちょっとダメ男なんですけど、母性がくすぐられるんですよね（笑）。映画のインテリアと音楽にはとても影響されています。

壁一面の本棚は、部屋に合わせて作られたんですか。

これは、インテリア関係で働く主人の友人に、モルタルで作ってもらいました。海外で見たものなどを参考にイメージを伝えて、図面を引いてもらって。特に主人は、棚の厚さにこだわりがあるみたいで、こまかなところまで注文をつけていました。「日本の棚だともう少し薄いから、あと何センチ欲しい」とか（笑）。インテリア好きの男の人同士って、そのこだわりが分かり合えるから楽しいみたい。

子どもの好きなキャラクターものなどは、どのように折り合いをつけているんですか。

子どもがいると、いつの間にか、訳の分からないキャラものがいっぱい増えてしまいますよね。壁にシールとか貼るのが大好きですし。今は貼る場所を決めていますけど、まぁ、それも味になるからいいかなと、諦めました（笑）。娘が描いた絵や工作したものは、本棚に飾っています。

It’s really interesting that you two have different reasons to buy a same thing. Are there any things or culture you have been influenced?

I love movies and novels so much. When I was around 20, I was into movies made during the 1960s and 1970s. The images, music, costume… I love everything created in the period. Above all, works of François Truffaut went straight to my heart. My favorite is Jean-Pierre Léaud, an actor who had starred in Truffaut’s movies since “Les Quatre cents coups.” Although he was always in a role of a geek-ish guy, that arouses my maternal instinct (laugh). Interior decors and music in Truffaut’s movies have a pretty big impact on my taste.

Was the shelving unit occupying one wall furnished by your special order?

It was made with mortar by my husband’s friend who works in the interior industry. My husband asked the friend to draw a plan after talking him about his ideal shelf which he saw abroad. As he was especially fussy about thickness of the shelf boards, he gave the friend detailed instructions, saying; “Japanese shelf boards are too thin. I want to make those Xcm thicker” (laugh). Having similar taste in interior décor, they seemed to enjoy sharing their passion.

How do you deal with kid’s products with cartoon characters?

If you have children, your house becomes filled with such character merchandise. And they love to put stickers everywhere. Though my daughter and I have decided where to put those, I actually gave up stopping the act as the sticky stuff makes our house more tasteful (laugh). I display my daughter’s paintings and handicrafts on book shelves.

棚の上には繊細なガラスやカトラリーが飾ってあったり、壊れるものもたくさんありますが、お子さんにはどのように言い聞かせてるのですか。

娘も店にいる時間が長いので、家の中も触ったらダメという場所は分かっていると思います。大人と触れ合うことも多いので、いい影響を受けてくれるといいですね。あんまり勉強しろとは言いませんが、いろんな作品を見たり、触れたりしながら、自分の「好き」を見つけていってほしいです。

幼いころから「心地いい暮らし」が身の回りにあれば、センスが磨かれそうですね。泉さんは、この部屋で、どの場所がお気に入りですか。

このチューリップチェアに乗って、ゆらゆら揺れて座って本を読む時間が好きです。天気のいい日は、8時半くらいから陽が入って、すごく気持ちいいんですよ。

仕事、子育て、家事と両立していくことは大変だと思いますが、今後やっていきたいことはありますか？

今は子育てで難しいですけど、ヨーロッパの映画や音楽に影響を受けてきたし、ロンドンにご縁があるので、イギリスに買い付けに行きたいですね。作家と感性が近いと感じるもの、自分が使いたいと思うもの、まだ日本に入ってきていないものをセレクトして、お客様に提供していきたいです。そして『PATINA』らしい展示会で発信していきたいですね。

You have many breakable items in your house such as glassware and delicate cutlery on the shelves. How do you remind your daughter not to touch those things?

Since my daughter spends much time in my store, she knows what she cannot touch even in her house, I think. I hope she has been positively influenced by adults around us as she has frequent contact with them. I seldom tell her to study, but I do want her to find favorite things while seeing and touching various artworks.

Having had a comfortable life from her childhood, she will definitely cultivate good taste. Where is your favorite place in this house?

I love the time when I read a book on this Tulip chair. When the weather is good, we can get the sun from 8:30AM. It’s so refreshing.

Although it may be quite hard to juggle work and motherhood, do you have anything you want to do in the future?

I do want to travel to the U.K. to buy products for my store since I have been coincidentally linked with London while European movies and music have had multiple effects on me, though I cannot do it now as I’m in the middle of child-raising. I’d like to find things that are made by artists who have similar tastes as me and products I personally want to use in my house, as well as items that have not been imported to Japan yet. Then I want to introduce those to my customers through exhibitions which only PATINA can hold.
